A lot of awesome memories from that game. My Voodoo Rush, playing at 16-21fps, discovering my first game secret in a 3d world that made physical sense (before that i used to wish i would discover one, but they were somewhat weird, with invisible walls and such). In particular the soundtrack I think still shines today.
He who controls the rocket launcher, controls the DM! :D

These guys really made a difference in time! I wouldn’t consider them an artwork company but their technology has really enabled so many great experiences in artwork that I had to pay a tribute. For their time I must admit each game like Doom 2 & Quake did stimulate my artistic imagination (i used to dream up maps a lot :P probably my start to 3d gfx), and even some of their games had some exquisite artwork experiences: the music in Quake 2, the (intro) story in Doom 3, and simply making real things one had never seen before, weather it be the image of a (fantasy) Nazi prison/dungeon or bringing true and polygonal 3d that you could see from any angle when we were before even excited by a 8 angle sprite. Big respects!
Always did like his keynotes because he seems to have a somewhat detached position and can give a somewhat objective view of a technical insider without (so much) marketing spin. The vid is 12 part and this is just part 8.
Now I wish I could say Quake 2 is an art masterpiece, but to be honest I played it more as a fps experience & a technology breakthrough… i love the immersion that 1st person brings… but there is one BIG thing that made my play a FANTASTIC ride, and that is the amazing music. It blew me away and set my standards for many years to come of what great adrenaline music can be… for years I would ask everybody if they know of anything like this, and though it’s been many years I don’t think I have ever found anything as energetic and yet without the clutter of words (unfortunatelly music like this is usually accompanied by screeming people, which tend to bring more negative feelings while this brings pure “I’m doing something exciting” feeling). Also very cool: because it was audio tracks I could take my Quake 2 cd to friends and listen on their cd players: everybody was blown away.
Btw, if you wanna hear the real sounds to the video (the game intro) it’s here (there too my favorite moments are when the music purrs with the drama of the crash after the excitment of the great attack).
PS: I was still marked more by the Unreal soundtrack, but the story of my reverence for Straylight productions and their mastery of tracking is a story for another post…
