I happen to love gamepads. I won’t get into the full debate as to why here, but rather i’d like to touch on something else: I always thought it’s only my friends who are always teasing me about this, but I’ve had the displeasure of finding out the internet is fulllll of intolerant people. Google the name of a pc game and a gamepad, like somebody like me who might like to do that would, and you’ll certainly find a forum thread that goes something like this:
Q: "hi, i was wondering if yon play ____ with a gamepad"
A1: "gamepads suck!! keyboards and mouse rule! you’re stupid for wanting that"
A2: "gamepads? seriously!
) ha ha. you don’t have precision with those, this game was meant to be played with the keyboard & mouse"
A3: "you can’t play a FPS with a gamepad!!!!"
…
Not only is that quite rude & intolerant of other peoples’ tastes and interests (be it logical reasons, accesibility ones or simple confort & preference, I would have expected gamers of all people to be more enlightened than the people they call narrow minded who hate games), but on another level it’s totally changing the topic. That person was just looking for some help in a problem… that’s about as rude and nonsensical as another pattern i see often on forums:
Q: "hi, sorry, i’m new here, I just wanted to ask, I can afford to buy video card A or B and i was wondering which one is better. thank you"
A: "oh, you should save a little more and get card C"
again that’s quite insensitive i think to the fact that based on the question probably the person asking has probably already researched the market and established their desired price range and is just wondering in that price which one of the two to get, and then people jump in who think everybody can afford (or is willing) like them to get a super high end system…
I just thought i’d write this, not to complain, complaining is useless, but in the hopes that maybe it will remind us to be a lil more tolerant with other people’s tastes & possibilities instead of tryign to enforce our own values. So you like a mouse & i like a gamepad for our fpss? And yes, i do like games too, just like you… is it so absurd to believe that I would like to enjoy your favorite game in a way that is relaxing & enjoyable to me? Here’s a wish for everybody to accept taht we’re all different and it should be okay for you to enjoy sports games and me to enjoy rpgs and yet for us to be friends and partners in this great passion we share: games.
PS: it is though funny to entertain the debates, with both sides having such strong and passionate arguments. My personal view is that both sides are right, and one truth does not destroy the other, but it’s funny to see both sides having such strong supporters: from people getting angry even at the thought of using anything other than a mouse to people starting threads like "no PC gamepad support = No Sale!!!"
) With such strong supporters on both sides i just hope it doesn’t degenerate into crusades

Kotaku has a very cool article: news from the past. It talks about the Sega Genesis launch, which i find delightful, as I’ve often contemplated the fact how a new game/console can seem to us soooooooooooooo awesome and cool, like everything, and how we can’t wait a few years and if we do it feels "old". When in fact our old is lightyears ahead of somebody from the pasts sci-fi dreams of oldage. Take for example from the article
Benefits of Genesis include high definition graphics; increased color and motion; stereo and high-fidelity music
Now you can just know a lot of people drooled and dreamed about that, sound familiar? People talk about high definition graphics in consoles… when in truth our HD gaming is often times not even 720p, rendered lower & upscaled. One can only presume that maybe the next generation of consoles, 5 years or more down the line is the one that will actually render at 1920×1080 (which if you think about it is just about 2 megapixels, which for a camera everybody would say it sucks these days)… nevermind that resolution doesn’t even matter as much as realisting lighting (eg. the news on a SD tv looks realistic without having a high definition) which is probabily much further down the line… so my personal attempt is to control my desire & learn to delay games & still enjoy them as new. Just hope i don’t die before and miss any good ones

I’m happy to note that it seems big time developers ARE paying attention to good ideas in lil indie games & tech demo type ideas: puzzle solving via time loops: yeaayyy! (remember the pointer game i posted here?)

As far as I’m concerned this is one of their best shows eeeever (and they have done some brilliant ones). Such a fitting and brilliant simplification of a typical MGS twisted storyline. Hope I didn’t remember too many spoilers and that it’s from MGS1 which i have no interest in and not from MGS 4 which I’m looking forward to.

OMG!!! COULD IT BE TRUE??? This is not that remake with better graphics is it? Could it be that finally, after all these ages, finally a new monkey island game? And apparently also a relatively good one? Do I mind if it’s episodic? Nope. Worst case scenario you abstain for a while and then gulp a few episodes at once.

Frightening… moving… yep… it looks like this may be a true silent hill game. Lookign forward to it. I felt bad about never playing SH1 (2,3,4 so far, with 0 ongoing), so i’m happy for the oportunity, even happier that it looks like it may be a polished production!

Star Wars drama & professional production at it’s best. I sure do have a love hate relationship with star wars: on one hand i do complain about it being a shallow black & white universe mostly, on the other i’ve been through countless books and even a couple of games set in it. My excuse is that that universe has also had the honor of drawing in some quite otherwise imaginative people… well, i guess i’m just trying to excuse myself for falling in excitement with this vid… making me forget for a moment that this is a MMO
Great stuff!!! If it wasn’t a MMO i’d be all over the idea. Btw, one MMO i’m actually curious about (not that i’ll play it, mind you) the one based on Vampire: The Masquerade. I once played a bit of a MUSH in the universe and i thought it had great potential due to the social nature of the story.

Hey! check it out! I’ve never seen this show before yet it seems quite fun, i like the upbeat mood & playful atmosphere. As for the content: quite neat! I like their reasonings on the value of actual physical controllers. Also i hadn’t known about that presentation the no controler driving in Burnout: didn’t think it was taht far along. cool!

I’ll take this opportunity to recomend AVP 2. It’s a PC game from around 2000 I believe, which i won’t recomend like many others for the great shooter it is or the "most frightening to play (as a marine)" like a friend insisted (i still root for "Blood" on that one), but for the unique 3 point of view story. It’s one of my top 3 contenders of any medium in telling a intertwined overlapping story. The other two are: … wait for it… guesses? well, Starcraft and … forgot name… turn based game like Heroes… has 2 great expansions two… okay, it’ll come back to me and i’ll add it then… if not, remind me?
Edit: yep, it’s Disciples 2! Thank you Diana for reminding me!
