From Kotaku: Ubisoft Acquires Visual Effects Studio Behind 300
Our glorious games industry is yet another step closer in the merger with (asymilation of?) the movie industry. It’s a shame to waste good assets, artits, footage… i do belive this is the future: why make some models/animation twice, both for the movies and games?

Bonus Round: E3 preview: PS3 & PSP
0Well, i can safely say I am unimpressed and quite uninterested by any of the things that are expected on this E3. Since I posted the last one the Nintendo preview came out too… not very surprised that there either I didn’t see anything impressive. Basically everybody is impressed with masses and things that are selling… and that means mainstream, average stuff… not niche artistic stuff… I’m hoping there might be some awesome surprised like "Heavy Rain" or the Team Ico game… but they haven’t talked about any of those…

8US game sales > DVDs
0
my oh my! this is quite big (Gamespot article):
According to the NPD Group’s year-end figures, the US retail gaming industry took in $18.85 billion during 2007. That’s nearly twice the Motion Picture Association of America and Nielsen EDI’s record-setting US box office take of $9.6 billion for the year. The gaming industry even surpassed DVD sales in 2007, reported to be $16 billion by the Digital Entertainment Group and $15.9 billion by Adams Media Research.
Exciting, ain’t it? Now if only the rental business developed: we’ve already got movies beaten at the box office, now DVDs…

Prototype: artistic vision
0
Okay… this is a tricky one… on one hand:
the environment looks quite bad to mee, nothing that i find inspiring or artistic or anythign like that at all. obviously they can’t warp it a LOT like create amazing cathedrals if they want it to be set in a real town… but it’s not even warped enough to create mood for me: for example the city in Bloodlines was so corrupt that even though it’s modern it’s a whole other reality… Also the animations seem jerky and sometimes strange to me and I’m afraid the things they talk about in terms of vision and realism are far from being do-able with the present level of technology…
but on the other hand:
i quite agree with them: with all it’s (to me) uninterestingness this reality-inspired (i’m not going to say "realistic") setting could (if they make story branches or something intriguing) create something very special. I do agree that people need things they can relate to. And indeed towards the second part of the clip i did see movements which could fulfil fantasies…
So for me it’s a toss-up: i probably won’t play this game for the visual artwork, but if they play their story (and by that i mean choices/branching, or at the very least a fascinating anti-hero, but i doubt that alone could do it) right… well this could have the impact that Fallout 2 had on me… but again… i’m suspicious. I hope with all my heart and wish them the best of producitivity though!
ps3 ingame personal playlist!!!
0chatting with friends while playing… well, yes, i guess… but that’s nothing to me compared to the joy of having my own music while playing a biiiig game. I love immersive worlds… but due to material limitations they usually can’t put in there a playlist long enough (or good enough?) to keep me 30+ h … i quite dislike repetition. So this is great news to me… for when i’ll get a ps3 :P for now i’m still sticking to my ps2 + secondary set of speakers plugged into my mp3 player :P
PS: and read that in like 5 days they’re also gonna launch the dualshock 3 in europe :D great news. Now all i’m waiting for is some serious price dropping and the bundling of the dualshock 3 :D I ain’t askin’ for much, right? :))
The 1UP Show: Episode 06/27/08

1up talks about: Battlefield: Bad Company, Alone in the Dark, Gears of War 2 Q+A
my thoughts: Well… i was hoping more from Alone in The Dark… more mood, to be precise. Bad Company gives me a unpleasantly strong "war shooter" vibe: from some adverts i was actually hoping it would compensate this by being either very acid humorous or trully over the top in effects like Black was… but it’s starting to look like neither. As for GoW2… more of the same multiplayer stuff, it seems to me. Can’t get excited by multiplayer :P
Diablo 3 debut gameplay
0Well, based on my other posts you can probably guess that I won’t be a diablo fan: endless masses of monsters and "kill, kill, kill, kill… oh, and kill" type gameplay is not what i’d call artistically deep… however I will say that I can understand why people would love it: the artwork seems quite beautiful, and I’m sure the level-uping and item collection gets quite addictive… now if only somebody could do that with deeper options than making my fingers hurt because of all the mad clicking like Diablo 2 did, making me stop playing it even though i was quite curios of the story & enjoying the self development aspects.
Zero Punctuation: Metal Gear Solid 4
0Oh.. oh… Yahtzee reviews Metal Gear. Would love to spoil it for you all by giving out the verdict but alas I have yet to watch it. Off I go.
Fallout 2 Intro
0Yes, you could say that i’m attached to this just because of the brilliant games, fascinating moral choices, depth and sheer volume of options… but i think it’s more than that: this has got style… character… it’s not about technology show-off, it’s about human emotions and experiences…
PS: if you’re wondering what this is about the "War Never Changes" introduction should shed some light.
