Okay, I couldn't keep it in anymore… can you tell that I'm already super excited about Christmas fuuun?!?!? :D

Oooooooooooooooooo

Okay, so here's the lowdown: ArtsyGamer.com is only half about cool games with artistic values, the other half is about the fantastic community and friendships we're building here, gathering special peoplez, we are. So, here's the deal: this shall be Artsygamer's 3rd Christmas, and on this magical occasion we shall start a tradition! An awesome one! I'm starting to build a list of people who are interested in joining. On the 18th I will use this list to randomly extract (out of something christmasy, like a hat or something) everybody's Secret Artsy Santa (SASsy, non?). Then i will contact the people on the list with their respective giftee. On Christmas night we all send the gifts and we can then discuss them in great excitement the next day :D.

The nitty gritty

For speciffics I was thinking a low budget Steam game (at the time of writing this there's 300+ at <5€ and 831 games at <10€, though I propose to stick around 5 so as to be the most accessible for everybody, it's more about the fun and the gesture than anything). I figured Steam 'cause it's the most hassle free as far as I know and it's digital instant delivery makes it convenient, plus I bet quite a couple of us have an account lying around somewhere. Plenty of choices & probably a ton of fab holiday deals on fantastic games are guaranteed :D

Why would I do it?

Well… for the huge joy of giving, of course! Imagine you get to browse through a ton of games, remembering the ones you liked most, and share one with somebody, spreading the joy, making the world a better place!

As an incredible added bonus you will also get to have a cool surprise waiting for you to unwrap. Even if you've played the game before it will be super fun to get it, knowing that somebody else (and you get to wonder who) reaaaallly enjoyed that game and thought it was special enough to share. It probably meant a LOT in their life… it's magical to share that!

Oh, and just think that in 10 years when there'll be a ton of people revering the religion that will be ArtsyGamer you'll get to smugly say: "well, you know, I was there in 2010 for the first Secret Santa!" … and then smugly point to the cool game you got too! :D

I want in! Pleaaaaseee!!!

Well, gimme a private message (top menu), or email, or facebook or even contact form (i hope it works)… you could even just leave a comment here if the email you're registered with is the one you'll want to be receiving on. Name + email … and that's all :D

What now?

Well, now you start looking around, thinking of the best choice, imagining the excitement of giving and getting… making somebody just a tinsy bit more happy and in turn being super surprised with a lil game that might just be a fab revelation for you, taking you into a world you didn't even know existed :D YEAY FOR SURPRISES!!!!!!!!!

I haven’t really played much of it, but everything I saw had such great visuals and the humor was so funny over the top that I have to mention it. The animations are like soooooo expressive… (carryin heavy cows comes to mind… or was it pigs? or both? no no… there was something with the cows, the milking?) … enjoy :D

PS: love the twist on stealing the princess

PS2: Shiny entertainment rooocks!

PS3: I love how they didn’t stay away from the fact that he is a worm and many times u see his wormy shapes put to use

Limbo

Rating: 5.0/5 (3 votes cast)

Developed exclusively for Xbox 360, Limbo is the first production of the independent game studio “Playdead”, grounded 2006 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The game revolves around the central figure of a boy who embarks upon a long, dark and dangerous journey in the quest of his lost sister. The Limbo actually represents the horrible world that he must silently trespass overcoming puzzles and challenges in order to reach what he looks for. It is no random fact that producer and game director Arnt Jensen chose this title for the game: in the Catholic theology, Limbo refers to the edge of Hell, a temporary state of those who died prematurely but not freed from the Original Sin. Also, Dante in his masterpiece Divine Comedy describes Limbo as the first circle of Hell, whereas medieval theological beliefs assigned Limbo as one of the 4 parts of the underworld.

This strong background of meaning can therefore explain the film-noir appearance of the game, dominated by deep blur and a fabulous range of gray tones, meant to convey solitude, uncertainty and danger of the gloomy world of the boy`s itinerary. The silhouette of the main character is the only one that appears to be alive under the heavy, smoky sky that covers everything. What is particularly strange about this game is the lack of a soundtrack in the common acceptance of the concept, compensated just by ethereal echoes and ambient sounds; the resulting silence makes you feel even closer the suspense and the atmosphere of the game.

Among the compact shades that dominate the scenery, white sparkles often appear in the foreground, creating a beautiful contrasting picture; and, as a significant detail, the boy`s eyes are always shining, like a small light in the dark. This black and white technique of the game is inspired from the German expressionism, a trend at the beginning of the 20th century, marking cinematography with black and white usually very abstract and suspenseful elements, e.g. Alfred Hitchcock` s movies. Concerning the game puzzles, Limbo combines the beautiful imagery with a unique, challenging and brain teasing collection of puzzles to be solved, ranging from simple to difficult and even hostile, but all of them equally fun to solve.

Based on all this extremely unique set of elements and features, the game has won the Excellence award in Visual Art and Technical Excellence last year. The bad part is that for now, the producers refuse to extend it on further platforms, although there are numerous requests for PC and Mac versions. Let`s hope they will eventually change their mind, because Limbo offers a very distinct and beautiful game experience.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey

Dreamfall is the sequel to a pretty classic 2D adventure game, The Longest Journey. It would be a good idea to play both since the stories relate, yet playing only the second can also be a very interesting experience. Its narrative and characters are what make this game great – while the gameplay might be a bit frustrating and sometimes slow. Definitely a good choice for those that enjoy long dialogues, a multitude of wonderful different environments and parallel stories that eventually intersect! (PS: unfortunately the trailer doesn’t really do the game justice)

Haven’t really played the game but the beginning section i find brilliant. I can totally see travel games like this: you’re the one looking around, getting to see all sorts of animals in the wilderness, places you couldn’t otherwise visit or explore… getting the tour, and unleashed (how cool would it be to have a game like that but with taking photos and exploration focus)

I shall do like the game, and say few words, though this is a GREAT masterpiece and one of the handful of games that deserve to be at the forefront of the games as art movement! To me it always made me think of some kind of mythical poetry. The game is so full of space to think, so charged with emotional atmosphere… and don’t even get me started about the music. Or the places, the guilt about the colossi who more and more feel like peaceful creatures and you’re the one …oh, and i’m not even one of those who have filled pages and pages of debates about the moral choice/sacrifice of it all and if it can be justified/was worth it, or the fantastic personality of the horsy… So, i’ll leave you with the folow-up beginning movie:
