Post The Dark Tower
on: November 27, 2010, 20:14

This is what I've been reading (when I have time) for the last 2 or 3 months.
The Dark Tower is a fantasy/SF/western series of books written by Stephen King, that he calls his magnum opus. I know, horror right? Well quite far from it. I started reading the books (there are 7 in total) because I saw someone mention it on their blog and saying how great it is, comparable to LotR and other major series and I said "hmmm, that might be worth looking into". And indeed it was.
The story follows Roland, the last gunslinger, and his quest for the Dark Tower. I have to say I started the 4th book about a week ago and the purpose of this quest is still as mysterious as in the beginning. But it doesn't really matter, the story is absolutely fascinating and King's style and attention to details are so mind blowing that you: a) end up enjoying every detailed description and b) can't wait to see what happens next.
It's interesting how in his quest he needs to select his companions (one of the books is actually called The Drawing of the Three) and he does that by opening doors that appear in his path and entering the mind of people from various time periods in New York. Forgot to say the action of the books takes place in a fictional world that overlaps with the real one in some places.
And now that I was looking up information for this post, I saw they're also turning this into a movie+TV series. Woo-hoo, can't wait!
Have any of you read all/parts of this series? :D

If it's the first book I completely understand. It's incredible long, hard to read and tedious. Even Stephen King admitted it and put out an edited version. But if you stick to it your efforts shall be rewarded. :D
