I am happy to report many of this generation’s greatest artists are in or heading towards the game industry: I really do believe that unlike those people who say great art was only made in the past those people, born in this generation are not only alive and well but bigger and better than ever before, just that those people looking back no forward don’t realize they’re no longer in oil painting but game concept art, no longer in scuplting but 3d modelling, performance arts are moving digital in many ways too, from animations to digitizing… and music… oh, the wonderful wonderful music! Which brings me to:

Already some of my favorite soundtracks & orchestral music are no longer olden historical ones that oldschool people know, but game composers, often employing huge philarmonicas and the like… though even that I suspect may slowly begin to be done more as a nod to the glorious past, cause with modern digital instruments it may become inefficient.

HOWEVER… game budgets and cultural respect may not yet be big enough to attract as many great composers as they could, so though many of the (imho) smart ones are already rushing into the field we still have many superb ones who you can more easily enjoy in the movie industry… but wait, there is a joy for us: here’s what i propose to you: especially in big open world games, weather your running with your sword, driving a car or flying through space, nothing is stopping you to making your own soundtrack mix: here are some of the ones i’ve found best: soundtracks from Pirates of the Carribean & A nightmare before Christmas work great with the huge open plains of TES4: Oblivion, I’ve greatly enjoyed Pink Floyd/Deep Purple & Dream Theater instrumentals while playing Carmageddon, great music while playing GTAs and i am currently delighted with playing X3: Terran Conflict on the soundtrack of the movie Inception. Awaiting your proposals & discoveries of great mixes like this! Sometimes you may find a movie that has a superb soundtrack emotional atmosphere even when the movie isn’t that great… a soundtrack just begging for a game to play on :D

PS: in a first i am now writing this post from within Steams in-game browser as I set my tiny Discoverer ship to head for new reaches of space and my trading Mercury ship travels long distances for maximum profit with Ore :D
