Bioshock – impressions

Well, i’ve just finished it. Some fresh random thoughts:
- great artwork in general
- more is not better: when i initially saw it’s presentation i thought each of those mutated guys was different, a personality… I was quite looking forward to the unique memory of encountering that teleporter fire guy…. that kinda faded though when i realized there’s a ton of them…
- the ending movie felt quite … dunno, didn’t feel resolved at all… I mean back i nthe days when cinematics were scarce maybe it would’ve felt like an ending… now it felt like a cutscene and no credits made mewonder if i really should click the dubious “continue”
- the first part of the game is quite brilliant to experience, with the less shooting and much more discovery
- I was lost more than once. I totally want freedom and nonlinearity in games… but until u have multiple choices and objectives it’s just a painful lie if you get dizzy in some coridors… I mean if i would have voluntarely decided to be scavanging for something, then yes, but as it was quite a couple of times i was just going around in circles
- loved the audio bits
- the ideology of the founding was quite fascinating
- the little sisters were strangely identical
In short my recommendation: first two hours, a MUST experience… then u decide. I would’ve liked more variety (after a while the style had gotten a bit stale and felt sorta recycled).

NOTE: I do understand why character duplication happens, both in terms of models and voices and other stuff… i’ve had quite a couple of humble attempts at creating game assets and i know how much time/money/resources creating more characters would take. I still however do want to express the ideal. There’s two solutions:
a) make games with less monsters. Not just to save resources, but would you like to see a movie (or read a book) in which the character fights the same enemy for the 10th or hundredth time? Takes away from the drama and feeling of tension, becoming filler content.
b) someday it may be more do-able to create more unique characters, looking forward to that game.

One of the most immersive games for me.  Not many other games i would call truly “role playing”… as in being thatcharacter as opposed to rising stats.

Yep, just saw all the vids… i must say i was totally unmoved. I mean the Sony & MS presentations were sleak, and the Nintendo one did contain that 3ds thingie… but… well, i didn’t see any games that would really tempt me, it feels like the whole market is in consolidation mode, sequels and predictable stuff, no price wars… games with choices? NOPE. It’s sad that not even 2011 might bring a new game that i could dig into (haven’t played in a long time, partly life, but partly i didn’t feel any games worth my time, ones with immersion). A new medieval immersive environment like Oblivion or like VTM Bloodlines… but these days it’s all online and coop and mmo focused so…

Of course these are my personal views… Watched Bonus round and people were psyched about the Nintendo presentation… i just scrolled through it… they called it hardcore gamer stuff even… it felt retro nostalgia stuff to me… ppl. go figure. (yes, talking about me too :P )

In case googling doesn’t bring up the results as fast as it did for me here’s teh big 3 conferences:

I’m tempted by it not only because of my love for exploration but also childhood passion for westerns, for a moment it even stirred the BIG temptation: “could this be a Oblivion/Fallout substitute?” I think not, because of choices and mandatory missions… and mostly action not dialogue… still, promises to be a must check out… let’s ask our resident GTA expert: Razvan, what’s the review on this one? Does it match up?

Can’t say I’ve really been a fan of the series, possibly ever (i have my doubts about my first one which i found to be an original setting) BUT i must say i’m proud of the game industry producing such moving stuff, in any context!
