Hey Ash, Whatcha Playing: Team Fortress 2
0Having two sisters… twins even, i can fully appreciate this… :)) Luckily they haven’t played Team Fortress 2… yet.
orcs & dishes…
0I was looking for some video to post about the old game Heretic that would show it’s artistic value to me but i saw this banner… brilliant concept: a orc washing dishes. I’ve went to the site (click on photo), but unfortunatelly I don’t undestand most he’s saying, I think it’s soemthing about losing his job and now hating dishes :P I originally though it might be something about level grinding… the glory being taken out of games by routine stuff… but still, the concept of a orc washing dishes… had to post it.

0I must say WoW stuff is making me curious… but unless it snows in the summer and they turn a lot of it into a singleplayer experience I still quite doubt i’ll get into it. I like my stories EPIC. Soul Calibur stuff sounds very exciting! It’s nice to see games that form a culture around them and outlast a couple of months in the excitement around them.

Cool show but can’t say i was impressed that much by anything. Nice that they have a mass appeal, well, nice for them, anyway…

e3 2008 Microsoft
0Wasn’t impressed by the show but the core audience should be satisfied, some consolidation for casual and FF13 was huuuge! Let’s see how Sony will react. Shocked even MS is forgetting the push for PC gaming that they were promissing with Vista. Would write more but got left index burned today ;p

Wow! must say i wasn’t expecting this, but this show got me quite excited! First Stalker with it’s immersion… veeery nice! I just hope
a) that they’re going to make it for consoles too so i can enjoy it, or if they’re going to make it pc only that they support gamepad play, but not only would that mean that i’d going to have to wait 4 or whatever years till i’ll get a computer for it but also i find that hardly possible with that inventory system: i quite hate it: seen it in Gothic 3 two: a full 3d world, but then sprite/2d images for inventory, not only does that take me out but also you can’t really see things that small well from sitting in bed/at a distance
b) the reason i stopped playing STALKER was because of not just lack of content but worst because of enemy respawning: for a game that made it so hard to survive (and i love that in the sense of immersion) having infinitely respawning generic soldiers … sucks… and I’m afraid the new one will be the same because they say it’s still with maps… and not having a one piece big world kinda invites that…
And then there was Killzone 2: i must say i’m not THAT much of a fan of the first (as opposed to say Time Splitters 3 or Black)… but in all the new gameplay i saw I was impressed with the coherence of the architecture… and indeed the fantabulous segment on art design explains it: great iteration, inspiration from reality to avoid lack of new ideas… the cinematics promise to be sweeeeet… and the general attention to detail and art/believability seems sweeeeeeeeettt
I too am very curious as to what will happen to the industry this year. My intuition about this year is more on the likes on Sony pulling some amazing stunt by capturing the masses with some casual stuff and that in turn securing territory for the hardcore audience… but that does seem quite impossible given their price. Still i do think they’ll make some buzz. As for everybody talking about "hardcore" Wii games… well, that to me seems soooo … strange? I mean it’s hard to even Consider Zelda a "hardcore" game… probably because my idea of that is some kind of mature theme/audience…
Bonus Round: E3 preview: PS3 & PSP
0Well, i can safely say I am unimpressed and quite uninterested by any of the things that are expected on this E3. Since I posted the last one the Nintendo preview came out too… not very surprised that there either I didn’t see anything impressive. Basically everybody is impressed with masses and things that are selling… and that means mainstream, average stuff… not niche artistic stuff… I’m hoping there might be some awesome surprised like "Heavy Rain" or the Team Ico game… but they haven’t talked about any of those…

1up talks about: Battlefield: Bad Company, Alone in the Dark, Gears of War 2 Q+A
my thoughts: Well… i was hoping more from Alone in The Dark… more mood, to be precise. Bad Company gives me a unpleasantly strong "war shooter" vibe: from some adverts i was actually hoping it would compensate this by being either very acid humorous or trully over the top in effects like Black was… but it’s starting to look like neither. As for GoW2… more of the same multiplayer stuff, it seems to me. Can’t get excited by multiplayer :P

i’m sticking by my opinion that a non-bundled peripheral cannot really change the market that much. My example would be the EyeToy, which has been aroudn for so many years and yet it never achieved critical mass…
Also i believe anybody going after the Nintendo audience has smaller chances simply because they’ve defined themselves as that niche. People see a product and associate it for one thing… rarely many things.
My expectations for E3 would be a price drop and possibly some new high end model. What i’d be excited to see would be a lower priced, hdd included model better built (less heat, smaller size, less power consumption…)… though I’m not banking on that.
In terms of games… well, they’ve totally lost me… not one single (non kid) artsy game, big western rpg or impressive non-war fps…
