Yes, you could say that i’m attached to this just because of the brilliant games, fascinating moral choices, depth and sheer volume of options… but i think it’s more than that: this has got style… character… it’s not about technology show-off, it’s about human emotions and experiences…

PS: if you’re wondering what this is about the "War Never Changes" introduction should shed some light.

Silent hill 4 intro

The memory of the amazing mood/feelings of camera flying through the house intro scene just popped into my mind… a very powerful scene in my opinion. This is a longer clip, including some gameplay footage and the scene I’m talking about only starts at 2:55, but for those who haven’t played the game it may set the context. I do believe this game is a masterpiece. Besides the camerawork & music in this clip you can also get a taste of it’s other great techniques. The character’s introverted nature helps a lot… and I was particularly moved by the feeling of claustrophobia given not only by being locked in but by the glimpses of the outside world: the feeling of being so near and yet impossibly far away, between them and yet not among them… couple that with the later questions weather or not they’re all dreams and/or the question of guilt…

PS: at the risk of a minor spoiler: this is a song that blew my feelings away when it popped up (fragment): Room Of Angel (Akira Yamaoka)

It’s not a game, but it so abunds with mood that I found it worthy of appearing here. I don’t want to spoil things for you. Just warnings: don’t let yourself be misslead by the title, or by the poster… it’s not a sci-fi, … at least not in the sense you’d expect it. Don’t expect amazing special effects… it’s more a mental piece… something like a play (btw, I totally recomend The Cube… this might be in the same niche?). That being said this movie blew me away… in a quiet kind of way… but it totally made it’s way to that special spot for me, the movie that defines a period of 3-12 months… I wish they came more often but I’m afraid things that blow me away like this are much more rare. Anyway, just wanted to give a buzz out for likeminded people out there: The Man from Earth. I doubt you’ll find this one in any blockbuster list, or movies with high ratings… but then again that’s why we started artsygamer: so that when one of us discovers a hidden gem the others may skip years of searching and just enjoy it. This is one of those few movies that made me think about stuff…
An interesting wikipedia quote I found on it:

The Man from Earth is a 2007 independent film written by Jerome Bixby and directed by Richard Schenkman. In what may be an unprecedented move, the producer of this film, Eric D. Wilkinson, has publicly thanked users of BitTorrent who have distributed the movie without express permission, saying that it has lifted the profile of this product far beyond the financier’s expectations.

I wonder if this will recur in different mediums (music so far?).

I quite dislike past retrospective backgrounds for stories as they lean too much towards recreation and too little towards on creation & originality, but to be honest this one shows promise to me. Why? Because unlike many other games which feel like just an engine, a mechanics on which levels are slapped on this feels more content oriented with events and story elements. Just to elaborate a bit: for example Crysis to me looks like nothing more than a tech demo with a story slapped on: it’s got an engine, and maps to go with it, but it sticks so much inside that that it feels to me like if I played an hour of it I could very well describe the rest of the experience. Obviously the maps are going to vary, possibly with some interesting ones (alien world? sounds good vs real-life-boring recreation)… (take this with a grain of salt though as I haven’t played it. Maybe if it’ll land on a console I’ll give it a try?)

I’ve just read this very exciting article on Gamasutra "Opinion: Is The Industry Ready For Its ‘Game Noir’?" … I don’t know if it is… but i soooooooooooooooooooooo hope so! And no, I’m not talking about little casual-like games, I’m hoping for games focusing on story more, games daring to invent the kind of gameplay I keep hoping for: games in which fighting enemies is less than 50%, ideally 20%, instead of the 99% that it is these days. From the article:

What we’ve got left is a huge gulf between popular, full-experience 3D action/adventure games that need to be financial blockbusters to survive, and marginalized casual/handheld/movie licensed games that don’t register on the mass consciousness radar.

We need our B films. We need that freedom to explore truly meaningful new avenues of interaction, quickly and nimbly, without the pressure of an eight-figure budget and multi-year dev schedule weighing down on the whole enterprise. Noir already scouted this territory for us.

Check out the full article! Another ray of hope!

Fahrenheit is to me a beacon of hope as to what games might become, at least in one of their branching directions (possibly their main one?): interactive movies, movies with involvement, choices… So it’s really great to hear that Quantic Dream is on it’s track towards it’s next big game according to gamesindustry.biz:

Acclaimed Fahrenheit developer Quantic Dream has bought the latest motion capture technology from Vicon for its top secret PlayStation 3 exclusive.

"To do so, we have invented our own format called ‘interactive cinema’ in which realistic, believable characters play a central role. "

Sounds to me like there’s going to be a ton of great cinematics! Yeayyy!!!

Games reviving the whole classic adventure movie genre? I understand a new Indiana Jones (movie, games…) is coming next year too.

From the game’s cool website :

A 400-year-old clue in the coffin of Sir Francis Drake sets a modern-day fortune hunter on a exploration for the fabled treasure of El Dorado, leading to the discovery of a forgotten island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The search turns deadly when Nathan Drake becomes stranded on the island and hunted by mercenaries. Outnumbered and outgunned, Drake must fight to survive as they begin to unravel the terrible secrets hidden on the Island.

They even have a nice viral marketing type website with an immersive approach (quite a nice podcast. I wonder if they’ll even have real-world posters in cities containing clues & such. I’d guess so.).
Very much looking forward to this one.
PS: I do believe cinematics are realtime ingame renderings!

Is it just me or is this a great add, particularly for those who know the media references and have been on the edge.
From the same campain, but with the focus moving from games to multimedia:

And in response to the music I’ll go with “i know i don’t need it… but i want it” :P

New Uncharted Trailer

I must admit I never really saw what all the fuss was about uncharted looking beautiful, maybe looking at it through my work graphics attitude i was overly critical, however with this new trailer I found it quite moving. It managed to get the emotion in and the different environments popped more and felt like pleasant variety. Suddenly the whole reinventing of the adventure genre makes sense to me. The music and the cuts add a lot… My favorite scenes are the birds flying away, the catch above the cliff and the one in the red sunset. Of course waterfalls are always pretty…
What do you think about it? As a video… as a game? Favorite scenes?
