It’s awesome getting a glimpse into the cinematics department of Blizzard: they’ve constantly impressed with amazing stuff, and seeing how they thought this out I expect this clip will also do that once it’s finished. For me personally it’s also fascinating to see these roughs, something i’ve never seen before animated like this with quite good voice: i bet this helps them not only in knowing what 3d assets to develop but also in the timing of the animation. cool!

I was just thinking of putting Daxter as my avatar again… because he’s just soooooooo awesome… and then i found this :))) lloooollzzz!!! Seriously though i love Daxter: amazing humor, very cute, and generally speaking an awesome and well developed character (Jak & Daxter 1-3, Daxter). Long live Daxter! (oh and for those who know the rocket scene… brilliant & soooo much fun!!!)

Well, normally you might even say i boycott MMOs … but this trailer had me hooked like I haven’t been hooked by a CG or even movie for a LOOONG time… every other moment I was surprised and curiously waiting what would happen next. I love stuff that breaks cliches and doesn’t let you easily guess the outcomes and the (invincible) heroes.

As great as this looks this clip, instead of raising my excitement lowers it: it seems like another story driven game… one in which (from this trailer) i can’t see any options of story branching or choices… this is great for the action… but will it do anythign to show that ***I*** am playing it and not somebody else? If not, how is it better than a movie or a book?

Gothic – the movie

Wow! what a great discovery! I was looking to post something to pay homage to the masterpieces that I think are Gothic 1 & 2 … but stumbled upon this… wooow!!! Seems to me like it’s a quite good video edit of game dialogues/cutscenes and dialogues overlayed on other cinematics… brilliant! I really do believe it’s a great story and worth telling, BUT the most amazing thing and the reason I, and particularly those who worked so hard to make this, respect it so much is because more than a story, it’s a living world… a place you can interact with, even some choices, and certainly the choices of exploration and discovery. One thing that a movie can never show but which I have fully experienced is the sense of responsability that you have while playing the game, particularly for your own life (we’ve grown imune to movies saying something is "hard" because we’re all comfy and safe while the heroes struggle). Compare this for example with Oblivion, which though a great game seems cheated around you, if you’re strong you encounter powerful creatures, if you’re weak it’s nice to you… while I do agree that games should be easy, i believe they should do that with a sense of realism in that a person who does silly risky thing has to somehow be told that they’re overstretching. In Gothic for example i felt actual fear and a need for courage to venture into the woods at night, especially off the beaten path…
While I’m writing this i’m also downloading the whole movie from World of Gothic: so you don’t have to watch it in a window and low quality… enjoy this great story told to you… and if you haven’t already this is the perfect intro to what i consider the gem of the series Gothic 2 (with addon)… which to me is one of the most believable medieval worlds ever… possibly THE…

Yes, you could say that i’m attached to this just because of the brilliant games, fascinating moral choices, depth and sheer volume of options… but i think it’s more than that: this has got style… character… it’s not about technology show-off, it’s about human emotions and experiences…

PS: if you’re wondering what this is about the "War Never Changes" introduction should shed some light.

Silent hill 4 intro

The memory of the amazing mood/feelings of camera flying through the house intro scene just popped into my mind… a very powerful scene in my opinion. This is a longer clip, including some gameplay footage and the scene I’m talking about only starts at 2:55, but for those who haven’t played the game it may set the context. I do believe this game is a masterpiece. Besides the camerawork & music in this clip you can also get a taste of it’s other great techniques. The character’s introverted nature helps a lot… and I was particularly moved by the feeling of claustrophobia given not only by being locked in but by the glimpses of the outside world: the feeling of being so near and yet impossibly far away, between them and yet not among them… couple that with the later questions weather or not they’re all dreams and/or the question of guilt…

PS: at the risk of a minor spoiler: this is a song that blew my feelings away when it popped up (fragment): Room Of Angel (Akira Yamaoka)
