hmmm… maybe that’s the reason i haven’t been posting… i really don’t see anything exciting this holiday around. I mean it occured to me that it should be the round of thanks giving and christmas and i remember in other years i used to be drowning in super awesome games this time of the year… and sure, there is the financiar reasons too holding me back but … i still say it’s the games. I mean i COULD be playing on my quite capable pc at this time (needed it for work, no gaming reason), i even got a handy dandy xbox controller… but … why bother? for war shooters, multiplayer games and best case scenario strategy oriented multi character management rpgs? why bother. your’s truly, games nut. void

Actually I’ve found while trying to design the perfect games in my mind that life is indeed the best made game out there, sublimely balanced to keep us constantly hooked, by some truly genius game designer… but I had to post this not only because it was a fascinating watch but because in both presentation and content it relates to what this website is about… showing that games can be deep/gamers aren’t the dumb ignorant people the media portrays them to be.

Assassin’s Creed II music

While the concept of variety certainly does attract me the mention of the romance and contrast to the dark first game (which btw i don’t think was dark at all) brings to mind the second star wars movie in the new trilogy which I think i was very dissapointed with and just made me put my last hopes in for the 3rd.

Back to the topic on hand though: seems like some pretty high quality music. Too bad i’m not into chorals, but alwasys makes me happy to see such nice productions.
PS: is it just me or do the locations look too much the same?

Interstate ‘76, the atmosphere, the muzaaak

I’m partial to car games in the sense that I’m quite not not enjoying them. Maybe it’s the fact that I never wanted to have a car and never got the excitement… so it happens that though i have tried several and indeed respect a lot the production values of many of them and could totally see why somebody would enjoy them very much I can only think of a couple that are closer to my heart (Carmageddon, I76, Burnout…), and they tend to be of the non-realistic type… this is about one of them:

Interstate 76 totally captured me with it’s story and most importantly it’s atmosphere. From radio chatter to vigilante attitudes & histories, and last but certainly not least: it’s groovy funky music… which is why I actually started writign this post and remembered I76:  apparently there’s still a website/community surviving for this game, and that’s where I found a full downloadable mp3 soundtrack :D how cool is that?

http://www.interstate76.com/download/i76audio.htm

As for the game: if you can endure it’s super low polygon graphics (which you might say adds a very interesting style) and you are curious about a vigilante car game where a group of car enthusiasts do their own police-ing… give it a try. I remember when i was playing it I was impressed with the mission variety, from shooting out your window to mounting stuff in the garage & missions ranging from hunting to running away and everything in between… but yes, that was like more than 10 years ago, so think by those standards. Either way, worth mentioning the music which doesn’t age like that. (btw, I hope slowly games will slow their rapid aging process… though since even photoperfect movies do I doubt it will ever stop…)

PS: i kept searching for the install mp3 (i remember I saved it for years after playing it), it’s a fun mix with switching radio stations until it i think settles on the song that starts around minute 1 on this youtube clip

30 Seconds to Mars debuts single in Dragon Age

I have huge love for this band… but like with many TV series… it’s the first album(s) that have it… and this new stuffs seems (to me) to have lost the magic that made them rise, which kinda makes sense… when you’re unknown it’s easier to be “tormented” enough to create stuff like they did… BUT one thing i do recall always listening to their music is my respect for them having lyrics that really spark my imagination, stuff that I often wondered how come they dared write about, when it’s much more mass-market to write about love/relationship stuff… and yet they did write these songs which to me sounded like lyrics for some sci fi novel soundtrack or something… anways, back on topic: maybe i didn’t drift off topic that far because it seems they (or others?) have too realized this and mixed a song with a game… as for it’s newness: hurrayyy for games!!!!! It says something that a big band like that would debut a song on a game.

Prince of Persia movie

Hasn’t really captured my imagination or artwork awe quite yet (unlike Prince of Persia: Two Thrones, but that’s a tale for another time) … but it does seem it is high enough budget that it might be interesting and with some luck it should provide some unique imagery (and a testimony to where games have gotten these days) … but the real reason i’m posting this is the brilliant comment of somebody to the trailer pointing out the irony if say some developer made a game based on this movie… which is based on a game :)

MGS 2 ending – deep stuff

Warning warning. Ending scene, spoilers… but in case you never played Metal Gear Solid 2 … well, I can’t let you miss out on this ending… the game touches on so many big themes, philosophical stuff, politics, social dynamics consequences of mass availability of information a-la-internet, personal identity…

The Last Guardian – emotion without words?

Some concepts that struck me: a purer form of enjoyment when you don’t understand the language? (did i mention that’s how i initially learned two languages i know that became second nature, or fist even, like this one) The other concept that hit me: the mystical nature of animals. Generally i like his point of view… content above framerate, not super praising the ps3 hardware but accepting the constraints and always wanting more from hardware in order to express more. I must say though that my personal opinion is somewhat different in that while I love his poitn of view, and i love the idea of communicating beyond the barriers of languages, I msut say my deepest game experiences did happen to be with games which had a couple of novels’ worth of words… they take you to a deeper level, a more complex experience… so yes, i do believe words are important… but yes, I also do wish we had one universal language so you could reach everybody.

I feel funny saying this seeing how i’m all into non-party based RPGs but this trailer really does make the team spirit come alive with each character feeling both interesting and important.
