my oh my! this is quite big (Gamespot article):

According to the NPD Group’s year-end figures, the US retail gaming industry took in $18.85 billion during 2007. That’s nearly twice the Motion Picture Association of America and Nielsen EDI’s record-setting US box office take of $9.6 billion for the year. The gaming industry even surpassed DVD sales in 2007, reported to be $16 billion by the Digital Entertainment Group and $15.9 billion by Adams Media Research.

Exciting, ain’t it? Now if only the rental business developed: we’ve already got movies beaten at the box office, now DVDs…

Prototype: artistic vision

Okay… this is a tricky one… on one hand:
the environment looks quite bad to mee, nothing that i find inspiring or artistic or anythign like that at all. obviously they can’t warp it a LOT like create amazing cathedrals if they want it to be set in a real town… but it’s not even warped enough to create mood for me: for example the city in Bloodlines was so corrupt that even though it’s modern it’s a whole other reality… Also the animations seem jerky and sometimes strange to me and I’m afraid the things they talk about in terms of vision and realism are far from being do-able with the present level of technology…
but on the other hand:
i quite agree with them: with all it’s (to me) uninterestingness this reality-inspired (i’m not going to say "realistic") setting could (if they make story branches or something intriguing) create something very special. I do agree that people need things they can relate to. And indeed towards the second part of the clip i did see movements which could fulfil fantasies…
So for me it’s a toss-up: i probably won’t play this game for the visual artwork, but if they play their story (and by that i mean choices/branching, or at the very least a fascinating anti-hero, but i doubt that alone could do it) right… well this could have the impact that Fallout 2 had on me… but again… i’m suspicious. I hope with all my heart and wish them the best of producitivity though!
