I’ve just read this very exciting article on Gamasutra "Opinion: Is The Industry Ready For Its ‘Game Noir’?" … I don’t know if it is… but i soooooooooooooooooooooo hope so! And no, I’m not talking about little casual-like games, I’m hoping for games focusing on story more, games daring to invent the kind of gameplay I keep hoping for: games in which fighting enemies is less than 50%, ideally 20%, instead of the 99% that it is these days. From the article:
What we’ve got left is a huge gulf between popular, full-experience 3D action/adventure games that need to be financial blockbusters to survive, and marginalized casual/handheld/movie licensed games that don’t register on the mass consciousness radar. We need our B films. We need that freedom to explore truly meaningful new avenues of interaction, quickly and nimbly, without the pressure of an eight-figure budget and multi-year dev schedule weighing down on the whole enterprise. Noir already scouted this territory for us.
Check out the full article! Another ray of hope!

What a very exciting idea! The immersion of such a thing would be amazing, even if used to a very small degree. Actually I think the settings should be turned way low usually & for most people but still the slight movements would be very interesting and it would be yet another thing to add immersion… but more importantly than such technical things I’m hoping we’ll see more art oriented content, drama, story… for example like Heavy Rain promisses these days.

Very exciting games in this show: God of War: Chains of Olympus & Burnout Paradise. GoW looks like a very promissing game, possibly a PSP system seller too, while Burnout I find very appealing due to the exploration and even though I’m a very non-internet player, and all for the singleplayer experience, I think this could be a fun multiplayer to host. Also they look at Wii Fit… though it’s not really looking that great imho.

Here’s to wishing more games will go in original art directions instead of the standard "real world in polygons" art style
Here’s a game that gives me hope for the future, at least with it’s concepts and hopes of following in the mighty footsteps of the originality in Planescape:

Gamasutra has an interview with Moby Francke, art director on Valve’s Team Fortress 2. I love the emphasis on art direction:
You might think that, for a publisher, and for marketing people, it would be better to have an easily distinguishable art style.
MF: I think video games are at such infancy in terms of art style, actually developing it. We’re dealing with 4000 years, really, of art and conceptual design.
For it really not to be utilized, and for the industry to basically dwell in a certain type of genre which has been around the 1980s up to present time, it’s pretty much all they’re embracing.
It’s the same way, you have Star Wars and the original Stanley Kubrick movie 2001. And people embrace that genre of outer space, so to speak. And it’s continued to this very day. Hopefully people will wake up someday.
Couldn’t find his previous works or samples but here’s what the Valve team page has to say about him:
Moby Francke – Artist
Moby is a character designer for Half Life 2 and the art lead on Team Fortress 2. He brings to Valve academic fine art training with an emphasis in illustration. After graduating from the Academy of Art San Francisco, he worked at Lucas Arts as a conceptual designer, and taught figure painting at the Academy of Art SF. Hes won several prestigious awards, including 2 New York Society of Illustrators Competition Awards. He is originally from the small Caribbean island of St. Thomas, and enjoys the simple things of life.
I knew there was artistic vision and direction since I saw the focus on silhouettes and influences from classic comercial illustration:

I didn’t expect it to be so engaging but it’s quite exciting. Great music choice, great editing… How many times do you think will *this* video get dissected?

Sounds very promising. The serious story combined with the choices with consequences (way too rare these days) make it very attractive imho.
